About

Welcome to Women In Sailing (WIS). We are dedicated to providing you educational resources, advocacy and support to women of all ages and backgrounds who are interested in sailing. Let’s gear up together to make this the most friendly site for both the novice and advanced sailors so we can all get out on the water! All feedback is welcome here since our goal is to share stories and increase our skills whether it be as a hobby or sport.

WIS was started by Captain Jeanne Oberstar as a way to communicate educational resources to other females (from a female’s perspective) who were interested in sailing.  She is an avid racer, cruiser and is passionate about teaching others.

While Jeanne has sailed up and down the coast of California on and off for the past 10 years,  she grew up on the lakes of Minnesota and the beautiful Mississippi River.  Sidelined briefly in 2007 by a horrible motorcycle accident, she was left her to wonder if she would ever sail again.  Because of this, she is even more enthused to pass on her love of the water and encourage females that yes, they can sail just as good as those men out there!
